Koprivnica Križevci County is located in the northwestern part of the Republic of Croatia, with a total area of 1,748 km2 and a population of 101,661, which makes it the seventeenth largest county in Croatia.

The administrative structure of the Koprivnica Križevci County consists of 22 municipalities and 3 cities and the seat of the County is the city of Koprivnica.
On the north-eastern side, Koprivnica Križevci County borders with Hungary. Within the Republic of Croatia Koprivnica Križevci County borders with Međimurje, Varaždin, Zagreb, Bjelovar-Bilogora and Virovitica-Podravina County.

The most important roads in Koprivnica Križevci County are state road DC 41 GP Gola – Koprivnica – Križevci – interchange Vrbovec 1, state road DC 2 (“Podravska magistrala”) and subdivision of the highway Gradec – Križevci, of which 6 km passes through the Koprivnica Križevci County, as well as railway lines on the corridor Rijeka – Budapest and Varaždin – Osijek. The existing geotraffic position of Koprivnica Križevci County will be improved by the continuation of the construction of the highway DC 10 Križevci – Koprivnica – Hungarian border, the construction of the Podravina highway and the completion of the construction of the second track of the Dugo Selo – Križevci – state border with Hungary (https://pora.com.hr/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/DEVELOPMENT-PLAN-OF-KOPRIVNICA-KRIZEVCI-COUNTY-2021-2027-SUMMARY.pdf).

According to the economic structure, in the area of Koprivnica Križevci County in 2021 there were active 1697 trades and 2060 companies of which 1794 micro, 236 small, 23 medium-sized and 7 large entrepreneurs.

The most important economic activities are:
• manufacturing (metal processing industry, pharmaceutical industry, food industry, wood processing industry and furniture production, paper and paper products production industry);
• energy;
• wholesale and retail trade;
• agriculture;
• construction.

The most important companies in the area of Koprivnica Križevci County in the above-mentioned activities are: Podravka Plc., Belupo Plc., Rasco Ltd., Bauwerk Boen Group Plc., Hartman Plc., Eko papir Ltd., Vemo trade Ltd., KTC Plc., Radnik Ltd., Carlsberg Croatia Ltd and Mauthner Ltd.

According to the statistical data of the Agency for Payments in Agriculture, Fishing and Rural Development for 2021, a total of 9.682 agricultural holdings were registered in the county, with dominant livestock production.

Koprivnica Križevci County has a significant tourist potential that is manifested through enology (wine roads), hiking, cycling, cultural, religious, sports, hunting and fishing tourism, and is abundant in natural and historical-cultural heritage, which represents a significant basis for various forms of continental tourism with an emphasis on rural tourism.
Total income of entrepreneurs in Koprivnica Križevci County in 2021 was 1.82 billion EUR, which is 7% more than in 2020. The profit of entrepreneurs in Koprivnica Križevci County in 2021 was approximately 88 million EUR, which is 16.8% more than in 2020. The foreign trade exchange of entrepreneurs in 2021 was 180 million EUR.
According to the data of the State Bureau of Statistics, the average net salary per employee in legal entities for the first quarter 2022 at the level of Koprivnica Križevci County was 906 EUR.

The most significant entrepreneurs in 2021 according to exports were Podravka Inc., Belupo LLC, Bauwerk Group Hrvatska LLC, Hartman LLC, Mauthner LLC, Rasco LLC, Eko papir LLC, Carsberg Croatia LLC, Vemo Trade LLC, and Monolitinvest LLC.

In the area of Koprivnica Križevci County there are 3 business incubators: Business Incubator Dravska and Incubator of creative industries managed by Enter Koprivnica Ltd., Business Incubator Đurđevac managed by Stari grad Ltd. and Križevci Development Center and Technology Park, which is managed by Križevci Entrepreneurship Center Ltd.

It is also important to mention other entrepreneurial support institutions that provide support to entrepreneurs: Croatian Chamber of Commerce – Koprivnica County Chamber, Chamber of Crafts of Koprivnica Križevci County, Regional Energy Agency North and PORA Regional Development Agency of Koprivnica Križevci County.

According to the NUTS 2 division, Koprivnica Križevci County is part of region Northern Croatia, and in accordance with the new regional support map, the intensity of support for entrepreneurs can range from 50% to 70%.

Koprivnica Križevci County, together with Krapina-Zagorje, Međimurje, Varaždin and Zagreb County is part of the region Northern Croatia within the Plan for the Industrial Transition of Northern Croatia which was adopted in November 2021. At the level of the Industrial Transition Plan, 5 regional value chains (RLC) have been defined and will be encouraged:

  • RLC Smart industry of Northern Croatia
  • RLC Production of vehicles in Northern Croatia
  • RLC Health industry of Northern Croatia
  • RLC Green growth of Northern Croatia
  • RLC Service sector of high added value in Northern Croatia.

In the area of Koprivnica Križevci County there are 36 schools of which 10 are secondary: 3 gymnasiums, 3 high schools, 2 vocational schools, 1 art and 1 music school, and 3 Centers of Excellence for encouraging gifted students.

In order to improve the quality of vocational education, Koprivnica Križevci County Competence Center from the (sub)sector of electrical engineering and computing was established, and within this project, Vocational School Koprivnica and partner institution Vocational school Đurđevac were reconstructed and extended, while the equipment is currently underway.

Higher education in the area of Koprivnica Križevci County takes place at the Križevci College of Agriculture, which is one of the oldest agricultural and forestry universities in Southeastern Europe that has been operating since 1860, and University North in Koprivnica, which was founded in 2012. Recently, in Đurđevac there is also a new undergraduate professional study in Computing and Informatics.
