The project’s location is on the top of Sveti Jure on Biokovo mountain, which is a part of the Biokovo Nature Park, a very attractive tourist spot near the Makarska Riviera, under the Biokovo Mountain. Placed in the Split-Dalmatia County the area is easily accessible on the Zagreb-Split-Dubrovnik motorway and from the Split International Airport. The most important economic activity in the County is tourism. The location provides endless possibilities for active holidays (hiking, walking and cycling paths on the slopes of the Biokovo Mountain); cultural and heritage sightseeing, pilgrim tourism (Catholic shrines in Međugorje, Vepric). Recently, an attractive site for tourists named “skywalk” was built at an altitude of 1228 meters a.s.l. It is a horseshoe-shaped platform protruding from the cliff with a glass walkway. The construction of a cable car from Makarska is planned in the future, adding more appeal to the project.
The goal of the project "Biokovo - Sveti Jure" is the reconstruction of the existing location which will enable the expansion of activities to the offer of tourist and catering services at the top of the mountain Biokovo (1762 m). The existing basic function of the facility will not be abolished, but the same location will enable the construction of a lookout, the development of tourism in a unique location overlooking much of the Adriatic Sea, mountain peaks and numerous islands.
The application of new technologies and automation of work will enable the conversion of part of the space and free up 200 m² of the existing facility for tourist purposes. On the flat roof of the existing building, additional construction of an external lookout with approximately 200-300 m² is possible.
The facility already has all the necessary electrical installations with main and backup diesel generators (170 kW and 115 kW), water and sewage installations, central heating, as well as internet connection with optical fibers. The existing infrastructure includes 4 antenna towers and a multi-purpose building of 1.313 m² in an enclosed area of 7.200 m². The place can be reached by asphalt road by car, and the vicinity of the building is accessible by tourist bus. A parking space for cars can be provided on site.
