The mountain lodge is situated above the city of Slavonski Brod.
Slavonski Brod is located in the region of Slavonia in eastern Croatia and serves as the capital of Brodsko-Posavska County. It is the sixth-largest city in Croatia by population and the second-largest in Slavonia. Brodsko-Posavska County is well-connected in terms of transportation and is situated in a geographically favourable and easily accessible area. The city is accessible by railway, highway, and inland waterways of the Sava River. It is strategically positioned at the intersection of transportation routes connecting several European countries and is approximately equidistant (about 200 km) from the cities of Zagreb, Sarajevo (BiH), and Belgrade (Serbia). All these cities have airports, making Slavonski Brod easily accessible to travellers using air transportation. The nearest international airport is located in Osijek, approximately 100 km away from Slavonski Brod.
A notable landmark in Slavonski Brod is the Baroque Fortress Brod, a complex representing a protected cultural heritage site in Croatia. Within the fortress, several cultural institutions are housed, including the Ružić Gallery, House of Tambura, and an observatory. The central city square features the house where the renowned children's writer Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić lived. Nearby, there are theatres, concert halls, the Museum of Brodsko Posavlje, the Franciscan Monastery from 1723, a sports and recreational center, and municipal pools.
The Dilj Gora area itself boasts numerous hiking trails spanning over 100 km, attracting a large number of hikers from all parts of Croatia and neighbouring countries. Hiking in this region has a long tradition, and the local mountaineering society "Dilj Gora" will celebrate its centenary in 2024, marking a hundred years since its establishment and organized mountaineering activities in Slavonski Brod.
The mountain lodge "Đuro Pilar" was built around 1905 in Slavonski Brod, at a location known as Popovićeva šumica, in the hilly area of Slavonski Brod, which is largely urbanized today. Originally constructed as a villa for the leisure of an affluent family, its appearance deviates somewhat from the typical design of a mountain lodge, adding to its uniqueness and attractiveness. The building assumed its role as a mountain lodge in December 1951 when it was assigned, along with the surrounding land and forest, for the use of the Mountaineering Society "Dilj gora." Over the years, it has become the central gathering place for mountaineers. The location of the mountain lodge is particularly advantageous, situated on a large plot resembling a park forest, offering a magnificent view of the city of Slavonski Brod. The lodge is easily accessible by vehicles, with asphalted access roads leading to it from multiple directions, and vehicular access is available from the northern side of the building. Additionally, the lodge is approximately 5 km away from the city center, providing convenient access to the tourist attractions of Slavonski Brod and Brodsko-Posavska County.
The city of Slavonski Brod, based on the Law on Local and Regional Self-Government, is responsible for the protection and improvement of the natural environment, as well as the care of sports and recreational facilities and related infrastructure. Through this project, which is entirely implemented within the city of Slavonski Brod, there is a significant contribution to these responsibilities, strengthening the public tourist infrastructure of the area, and enhancing the perception and offerings of Slavonski Brod as a destination for active tourism in continental Croatia. Furthermore, considering that Slavonski Brod was classified in 2021 as an area with a tourism development index of ITR 3, the project contributes to the recovery and resilience of the tourism sector through the implementation of already prepared public investments aimed at increasing the attractiveness of less developed tourist destinations. It also aims to reduce overtourism in the most developed tourism areas by improving destination quality and providing new services and infrastructure.
The goal of the project is to enhance public tourist infrastructure, improve the quality and diversity of services, bring the location closer to the public and visitors, as well as raise awareness among end-users about the natural beauty of Dilj Gora.
